Fellow Members,

It’s time to start preparing for the May 18th Annual Kids Fishing Rodeo.  We are looking for IWL members to help run the event.  We need volunteers in the kitchen to serve food, help with registration, sell raffle tickets, weigh fish, and hand out door prizes. Our Rodeos have provided some very special days to the kids and their families for many years.  Not only do these children enjoy the excitement of catching fish, they also enjoy winning door prizes and eating hotdogs. During the last two Rodeos, every child received at least one door prize, ranging from fishing lures to tee shirts and caps.   This year, Linkous Taxidermy will again mount the heaviest caught in the competition.

To get ready for the Rodeo, we will have our Spring Work Day on May 3rd beginning at 9:00 am.

The Spring Raffle will be drawn during the Kids Rodeo. Tickets will be mailed out this Spring to the membership.  Funds from the raffle will be used to help cover the cost of the Rodeo.  This Spring’s prizes include a 24 inch color TV, a bicycle from Hokie Spokes, a rifle scope donated by Whitetail Outfitters, a free one year club membership, and a rod, reel, and tackle box.  Please make an effort to sell the tickets to support a great cause.

Our club will be holding Action Pistol Shoots on the 3rd Saturday of every month beginning March 15th and ending in November.  Each month competitors will have a variety of stages to challenge their skills.  Shooters must bring along a holster to draw from and be prepared to fire up to 100 rounds of ammunition to complete the course.  All participants and spectators will be required to have eye and ear protection.

Beginning in March, we will have a series of presentations at the club membership meetings on “Reloading Ammunition” presented by members of our club.  I’ve heard numerous shooters at the range talk about giving reloading a try because of the high price of ammunition or to find that perfect load for their favorite rifle.  The first meetings will cover the basics of reloading and will then progress to more detailed topics at subsequent meetings.  If you have been thinking about reloading, this may be just the push you need to get started.

You can now access our Club web site from the new www.christiansburgiwp.com address.  We hope to have a calendar of events posted soon.

The lower roof that raps around the club house needs to be replaced.  Board members are getting bids on various roofing materials from a number of contractors.  Early estimates are in the $7000 to $10,000 range.

Some members have been inquiring about having access to restrooms when visiting the park during the winter months. The facilities in the club house are turned off to prevent damage from freezing and the cost of renting port-a-johns is too high.  This is an issue that has not yet been resolved.

Please read the Club Rules attached to this newsletter covering the use of the shooting ranges and fish ponds.  There are some changes to both, most notably the limit of four trout per membership per day.  It is the responsibility of each member to be aware of club rules and to follow them.

The turnout for the club Christmas Dinner Party was great. Over 40 members and family turned out for some good fellowship.

Please welcome the new members that have joined our club since the last newsletter: Ernest Jackson, Larry Saul, Russ Shelton, Thomas Shuford, Robbie Linkous, Ro Forehand, and James Pendleton.

A final reminder, if you have not paid your 2008 dues you cannot use the park.  Send a check for $75 made out to the “Izaak Walton League” to our Membership Secretary Tom Sitz.  If dues are not received by March 31st, you will be dropped from the membership list and will have to rejoin the club.  If you have any questions about your membership, contact your membership secretary.

Remember to wear membership badges when on IWL club property.

Respectively submitted,

Dean Gall, Secretary
