Downhill Draper Mile continues to grow in popularity by Cody Owens (Collegiate Times, on page 8 of the August 3, 2011 edition).
Dave Brewer, a runner from our area who now lives in Herndon, was featured in the November 8, 2010 Newsweek article: Addicted to a
run? The point of the article is that he has run
at least two miles every day for a quarter century. I wrote Dave asking, “Were any of your
runs inside when there was three feet of snow?” Here is his reply.
I have done some treadmill runs during horrific weather (and when my son
was a baby). But I love running in deep snow, and have run a few times
with 20-30 inches of the snow on the ground. My neighbors get a kick out
of that. A former VT runner from the 80's named Ron Kulik called me
during the 25-inch blizzard of 1996, and said, “I know you're running
today, want to go run in a parking garage with me?” He was quite upset
when I replied that I had already run that day.
Here is a copy of that article. (No, we did not cut off his head when we scanned the article.)
This article is about James DeMarco's High Performance Distance Academy held in July 2010 at Virginia Tech. Phil Latter, of ESPN/RISE, embedded himself as a coach in James' six-day camp and wrote this report as Part 3 of a series on summer running camps.
In June 2010, two US outdoor track records were set by runners from Blacksburg.
On June 12, in Raleigh, NC, at the Southeastern US Masters meet, John Hosner set a new 85-year-old age-group record. Even though the temperatures were in the mid-90s and the weather was sunny and humid, John ran 8:22. The old record was 9:18 (Bill Benson, age 85, Durham, NC '05).Complete meet results.
On June 19, at the New Balance HS Nationals Meet in Greensboro, NC, the Blacksburg girls set a new US outdoor high school record in the distance-medley relay. Their time was 11:31.26 (old HSR 11:31.81 Warwick Valley, Warwick, NY, ’08). Three of the girls set PRs. The splits were Kathleen Stevens 3:31.46 (1200m), Sarah Dorrell 58.97 (400m), Hannah Brown 2:12.61 (800m), Joanna Stevens 4:48.14 (1600m).
