Our pick for the August Garden of the Month Award is 2904 Wakefield, the home of Bob and Delores Hendricks. THe Hendricks's garden always looks lovely, and this month was glowing with mid- and late-summer perennials in bright summery colors. A nicely landscaped birdbath is a focal point in the front yard. Our thanks to Delores and Bob, for adding so much to our neighborhood's attractiveness. Stroubles Mill's July award goes to the Ritter garden, at 2812 Tall Oaks Drive. July bloomers--echinacea, gladioli, and hydrangeas, among other flowering perennials and shrubs--make this garden a pleasure for the passerby. Congratulations, and thanks! Our choice for June's Garden of the Month award is the garden of Kay and Randy Carver, at 4007 Tall Oaks Drive. The Carvers have done a lovely re-landscaping of their back garden, adjacent to the walking path, for all of us to enjoy. An arbor of beautiful New Dawn climbing roses and purple clematis is at the center of the garden, surrounded by many newly planted evergreens and bright summer perennials. Our thanks to the Carvers, for their many years of giving our neighborhood's walkers and cyclists such an attractive garden to appreciate. Thanks and praise, too, to the fine gardens and gardeners at 2903 Wakefield (the Winistorfers), 2810 Tall Oaks (the Shields), 2812 Tall Oaks (the Ritters), 2900 Tall Oaks (the Greshes), 3001 Stradford (the Pophams), and the always-gorgeous 2801Mount Vernon (the Scotts). Isn't June a fine month?!
This month the Garden Awards committee has come up with one of our rare joint awards. May's Gardens of the Month can be seen at 2910 Tall Oaks Drive, the home of Dawn and Francois Elvinger, and at 3006 Stradford Lane, the home of Lorraine and Barry Huehn. The Elvingers' large and beautifully-kept front garden is currently bursting with colorful flowering shrubs. The Huehns' lovely front garden features numerous clusters of light-purple irises, along with other bright and eyecatching spring perennials. We thank the Elvingers and the Huehns for adding so much to the pleasure of a walk or drive through our neighborhood. Thanks also to the fine gardeners at 3001 Wakefield (the Porterfields); 3007 Stradford (the Yauns), 4001 Tall Oaks (the Linker-Copelands), 6102 Albemarle (the Kopakowskis), and 2801 Mt. Vernon (the Scotts, our Garden of the Year in 2006).
Our first Garden of the Month award for 2008 goes to 3004 Wakefield Drive, the home of Mike Hochella and Barbara Bekken. At the time of our judging, during the first week of April, the family's garden featured cheerful swaths of light-yellow daffodils, surrounded by large beds of vinca minor, whose periwinkle-blue flowers were in full bloom. On a personal note, during that week I was hosting two Mayan ladies from Guatemala and their translator. I took them to see the garden, and asked them to describe it. They loved it for its simplicity, elegance, order, and for the way it pleased the eye. I couldn't do any better in describing this lovely garden. Congratulations to the Hochella-Bekken family, and thanks for giving us this early-Spring treat. The 2007 Garden of the Year belongs to Dave and Jeanne Roper, 1001 Auburn Drive. We like to have something blooming all the time, so our garden year begins in January, with early hellebores, continues with spring bulbs (we have many hundreds of daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips), and proceeds through the summer with peonies, daylilies, phlox, and flowering shrubs. But we like Fall the best, and try to finish the year with lots of late-season blooms. As chair of the awards committee, I know how much effort and care goes into our neighborhood's many wonderful gardens, and Dave and I are honored that the awards committee chose us this year. In addition to those named in the listing of monthly awards, the following homes also received at least one nomination: 2810 Tall Oaks (Shields), 4002 Tall Oaks (Terhunes), 3003 McLean (Campbells), 3007 Stradford (Yauns), 504 Monticello (Sellers), 2905 Tall Oaks (Vogelaars), and 3002 Tall Oaks (Linares).
The Fall 2007 garden award goes to Dave and Jeanne Roper, 1001 Auburn Drive. The Ropers' fall plantings are best observed from the access path to the neighborhood bikeway. This shady path is edged with ferns and hostas and with fall-blooming favorites--sedums, chocolate snakeroot, and toad lilies. A sunny garden patch, visible from the walking path, includes (or included) pink and purple asters, goldenrod, more chocolate snakeroot, and Joe Pye Weed, and will finish up with purple monkshood in October. Look for pink camellias in the front yard in November, if we don't have a freeze first. We're so glad our neighbors liked our fall garden! The gardens at 3004 Wakefield (the Hochella/Bekken family), 3001 Wakefield (the Porterfields), and 5010 Tall Oaks (the McLeans) were also nominated and were much appreciated by the committee.
Our selection for August's Garden of the Month belongs to Richard and Margene Hirsh, 3009 Stradford Lane. The Hirsh's front garden, while definitely pretty, is also a very nice example of the kind of ecological thinking, and emphasis on local self-reliance, that we are hearing more and more about. (Check out Barbara Kingsolver's best-selling book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, for more on this.) The Hirsh garden emphasizes the flowering plants native to North America, including phlox, giant sunflowers, rudbeckia, and early asters. Native plants naturally adapt well to their settings, and don't need the heavy pampering and watering that so many exotics require. And, in a daring departure from suburban orthodoxy, the Hirsh's front garden also includes tomato plants, whose beautiful fruits are just about ready for the family to enjoy. We congratulate and thank the Hirshes, for what one committee member called "a unique and creative garden."
Several of our neighborhood gardens were also noted and much appreciated. The Haraf garden at 500 Monticello, our first Garden of the Year awardee (2005), is always such a treat for the passerby. The Solbergs, at 2703 Mount Vernon, have a lush and varied summer landscape, both in front and in back of their home. And the McLeans, at 5010 Tall Oaks, offer a bright, eye-catching, colorful display of annuals. Thanks, once again, to all who work so hard and so willingly to keep our neighborhood a beautiful place.

Our choice for Garden of the Month for June is 3013 Lancaster Drive, the home of George and Suzan Mauney. The Mauneys' garden presents an attractively landscaped face to the street, with a mixture of colorful spring and early summer perennials and annuals. But its real beauty is saved for walkers and cyclists, who can enjoy their back garden, adjacent to the neighborhood walking path. The garden features a variety of colorful perennials, including daylilies, soon-to-be-blossoming phlox, a rosebush in full bloom, and about a gazillion giant hostas, beautifully arranged in curving beds under their shade trees. Congratulations to the Mauneys for this, their second win, and thanks for adding so much to our neighborhood!
Our choice for the May 2007 Garden of the Month award belongs to the Eggleston family, at 6102 Tall Oaks. The Eggleston garden features foundation plantings of rhododendrons and azaleas, in full bloom in mid-May, along with striking smaller garden areas of Japanese maples (which fortunately leafed out despite the April freezes), bright dwarf conifers, and a variety of spring and early summer perennials, including columbines, dianthus, irises, and evening primroses. This beautifully designed and maintained garden now joins our "elite" group of three-time award winners--congratulations once again to the Egglestons. Also receiving several nominations were the gardens of Roe-Hoan and Myushin Yoon, at 2909 Wakefield, and Harvey and Meg Peterson, 2803 Heritage. Thanks to all our neighborhood's fine and hard-working gardeners! Please take the opportunity to enjoy all the beauty that our neighborhood offers--and no one should miss the chance to walk by 2801 Mount Vernon, where our reigning Garden of the Year, belonging to Bruce and Pat Scott, is in full and glorious spring bloom.
April was a difficult month for many of our neighborhood's gardens (and gardeners)--the Easter weekend freeze was hard on newly-flowering shrubs, budding trees, and perennials that just got up too early during the warm March weather. But the dramatic and lavish display of bright red tulips at 3000 Wakefield Drive, the home of Jim and Margaret Shuler, did a lot to encourage us all, and the Shulers are the winners of the Stroubles Mill Garden Award for April. We all thank them for adding so much to our neighborhood's beauty. Cheers and thanks also go to the Linker-Copeland family, at 4000 Tall Oaks, the Popham family, at 3001 Stradford, the Pierces, at 3003 Stradford, and the Harafs, at 500 Monticello.
Our Garden of the Year was chosen from all of this year's award-winning gardens, from April to Fall. Competition was tough, but the committee has chosen a magnificent winner, the garden of Bruce and Pat Scott, at 2801 Mount Vernon. The Scotts' lovely garden comes to life in spring with masses of flowering ground cover, fresh spring perennials, and colorful bulbs. Then it moves on to summer and fall glory, with a wonderful and constantly-changing display of brilliantly-colored self-seeding annuals and perennials, lavish daylilies, and flowering shrubs, concluding now with bright asters and chrysanthemums. Watching this garden change and evolve during each year's growing season is one of the joys of walking through Stroubles Mill.
Our Fall garden award goes to the Eggleston family, 6102 Tall Oaks. The Egglestons won our April award in 2005, and have now bookended the gardening year with their lovely display of fall perennials and late-blooming bulbs--sedums, chrysanthemums, fall crocuses, anemones, asters, and late-flowering roses, nicely intermingled with bright dwarf conifers and the colorful fall foliage of Japanese maples.
The committee nominated and appreciated many of our neighbors' gardens, including those of the Morgans, at 2900 Ashlawn; the Shields, 2810 Tall Oaks; the Mauneys, 3013 Lancaster, and the Lopezes, 2803 Mt. Vernon. And especially noted and appreciated was last year's Fall garden winner, the McLeans, at 5010 Tall Oaks.
The August 2006 Garden of the Month belongs to Curt and Sita Nuenighoff, 2802 Mt. Vernon Drive. The Nuenighoffs won our award in June 2004 and again in June 2005, but their lovely August display of butterfly bushes, phlox, rudbeckia, shasta daisies, and other late-summer perennials shows that they are not just June-pretty. Please thank the Nuenighoffs when you see them, for adding so much to our neighborhood's beauty. We also thank the McLeans, at 5010 Tall Oaks Drive, for their lively late-summer garden which features dramatic cannas and other colorful blooms.
The Stroubles Mill Garden Awards Committee has chosen the garden of Ryan and Kate Lanham, 2812 Mount Vernon Lane, as our Garden of the Month for July. The Lanhams have a beautiful front-yard border, filled with the flowers that peak in July--echinacea, beebalm, daylilies, rudbeckia--all nicely mingled with variegated shrubs, for a lovely midsummer effect. Take a detour from your usual walk and enjoy this outstanding garden at the end of Mount Vernon. Thanks to the Lanhams for adding to our neighborhood's beauty; thanks also go to the Mauneys, 3013 Lancaster, the Petersons, 2802 Heritage, and the Porterfields, 3001 Wakefield, whose gardens were noted and admired by the committee.
Two of Stroubles Mill's most beautiful and most frequently-awarded gardens were so phenomenally lovely this month that our Garden Awards Committee just had to declare a joint win. Our June award goes to the garden of Dennis and Anne Hartman, 2709 Mt. Vernon Lane and to the garden of their neighbors Bruce and Pat Scott, 2801 Mt. Vernon Lane. No one should miss the chance to walk by and enjoy these two absolutely spectacular gardens. June means roses, and no one does roses better than the Hartmans, who have long specialized in these lovely flowers. Dennis believes that this year is their best year yet. Their back garden (visible from the bikeway) has dozens of shrubs bearing beautiful big luscious blooms (causing great awe and envy in those of us who can't grow these most regal flowers); many other flowers fill their yard as well, and their front yard is also graced with gorgeous flowering rosebushes. Congratulations and thanks go to the Hartmans for this great gift to our neighborhood. The Scott garden is, quite simply, a knockout, currently featuring brilliant golden and orange poppies, blue larkspurs, Queen Anne's Lace, and many other self-seeding annuals, combined with a constantly changing and masterfully arranged display of flowering groundcovers. This glorious garden just gets better every year. Congratulations and thanks to the Scotts, who make a walk on our bikepaths such a pleasure.
We also congratulate the Mauney family, 3013 Lancaster Drive, also a previous winner (Fall 2004), whose garden looks lovely now and gets even more striking as the summer goes on. Thanks to all who work so enthusiastically to make our neighborhood beautiful.
There was much to choose from in this most beautiful month, and many of Stroubles Mill's gardens received enthusiastic comments and nominations. The Garden of the Month for May 2006 is Jeanne and Dave Roper's, at 1001 Auburn Drive. Yes, the Chair of the Garden of the Month Award Committee finally got her yard looking good enough to win an award! The Ropers probably have more shaded and wooded areas than anyone in Stroubles Mill, so rhododendrons, hostas, ferns and impatiens are their best garden friends. Their pink "Scintillation" rhododendrons obliged by blooming at just the right time in early May. Also noted with much appreciaton by all of the Award Committee were the Peterson garden at 2803 Heritage Lane, the Meacham garden at 2802 Heritage Lane (the entire 2800 block of Heritage Lane is looking glorious), the Shields garden at 2810 Tall Oaks Drive and the Ritter garden at 2812 Tall Oaks Drive. Always lovely, and noted as well in May, are two of Stroubles Mill's most frequently nominated and award-winning gardens, the Hartman garden at 2709 Mount Vernon Lane and the Scott garden at 2801 Mount Vernon Lane. And our current Garden of the Year, the Haraf garden at 500 Monticello Lane, is a magnificent sight in May. Thanks to all of our great gardeners!
April 2006: The Yaun Family, 3007 Stradford Lane.
The April 2006 Garden of the Month belongs to Dave and Joanne Yaun, 3007 Stradford Lane. The Yauns' garden is a lovely display of flowering spring bulbs, nicely integrated with newly-flowering perennials and rising summer plants. When you see the Yauns, please thank them for all they've done to add to the beauty of our neighborhood. Closely following in our voting were the garden of Felix and Sally Pierce, 3003 Stradford Lane (an exuberant display of daffodils and other spring bulbs), and the garden of Chuck and Sue Hagedorn, 2902 Ashlawn Drive (beautiful flowering shrubs, spring bulbs, and attractive rock walls). Also nominated and noted with appreciation were the gardens at 4001 Tall Oaks (the Linker/Copeland family), 2802 Heritage Lane (the Meachams), and 2703 Mt. Vernon Lane (the Solbergs). And notable, as always, is the Haraf garden, at 500 Monticello, Stroubles Mill's first Garden of the Year, named at the end of the growing season last year. This year we have a new award, Garden of the Year, for our neighborhood's best-of-the-best, the garden which gave the passerby the greatest enjoyment month after month. Competition was tough; each of this year's Gardens of the Month was nominated, and all are looking magnificent as the flowering season comes to an end. We are happy to name the garden of Adam and Mary Ann Haraf, at 500 Monticello Lane, as Garden of the Year for 2005. The Haraf's garden is a beautiful sight from early spring onward, and it has reached a brilliantly colorful autumn peak in mid-October. Don't miss the chance to walk by and enjoy it. The Garden Awards committee has a tie vote for our Fall Garden award. We congratulate the McLeans, at 5010 Tall Oaks Drive, and the Petersons, at 2803 Heritage Lane, whose gardens were admired by everyone on the committee. The McLeans lost a big tree this summer and replaced it with a new tree, surrounded by brightly colored annuals and tall cannas, which are at their dramatic peak now. The Petersons have a lovely array of colorful hanging plants, late-blooming annuals, and blooming fall perennials such as toad-lilies. We thank the McLeans and the Petersons for adding so much to our neighborhood. Also noted and much appreciated were the fall gardens of the Mauneys, 3013 Lancaster, the Hendricks, 2904 Wakefield, and the Pophams, 3001 Stradford.

Pat and Bruce Scott's garden at 2801 Mt. Vernon Lane, one of Stroubles Mill's most admired and frequently nominated, is our choice for July Garden of the Month. The Scott garden always delights passers-by throughout the growing season. This month it offered a bright display of perennials including a lavish daylily border, phlox, beebalm, bellflower, and a constantly changing display of flowering groundcover, all arranged in a colorful and painterly way. Please thank the Scotts when you see them, for adding so much to our neighborhood's beauty. Also nominated and noted with much appreciation were the Hagedorn garden at 2902 Ashlawn, the Shields garden, 2810 Tall Oaks, and the Roper garden, at 1001 Auburn Drive.
The Garden of the Month for June is our first repeat winner, the garden of Curt and Sita Nuenighoff, at 2802 Mt. Vernon Lane. The Nuenighoff's lovely garden took the June award last year, and continues to beautify our neighborhood now. The front of the house is attractively landscaped with shrubs, perennials, and annuals. The back garden, visible from the street, features a rock-walled area with a variety of bright flowers and ornamental grasses, of many colors and greatly varying heights. A cool shade garden completes the landscape. Our thanks to the Nuenighoffs for adding to our neighborhood's beauty in June. Congratulations and appreciation also go to Tom and Jenny Hodge, 3008 Stradford Lane, for their colorful display of primroses, coreopsis, and an extravagant planting of just-about-to-pop daylilies, and to Bruce and Pat Scott, 2801 Mt. Vernon, for their always-changing and much-admired display of flowering groundcovers, shrubs, and seasonal perennials.

The Haraf garden has been a frequent nominee in the past, and has long been admired by everyone in Stroubles Mill. A passerby can enjoy a nicely landscaped front yard, then move on toward the view of the gardens in the back, which are filled with bright flowering shrubs, crisp new perennials, and colorful ground cover, all tied together by attractive gates and rockeries. Our thanks to the Harafs for the beauty that their lovely gardens add to our neighborhood! Also noted with appreciation were the gardens at 2812 Tall Oaks (Fitzsimmons/Saunders), 3002 Tall Oaks (Linares), 2801 Mt. Vernon (Scotts) and 2804 Heritage (Gotows). Many people think May is the most beautiful month of the year, and our neighborhood's many fine gardens made it hard to come to a decision!
The Eggleston garden offers the passerby a beautifully presented variety of spring bulbs, including daffodils, tulips, and smaller bulbs, along with bright dwarf conifers, a blossoming magnolia, and freshly flowering ground cover. Our thanks and appreciation to the Egglestons for adding to our neighborhood's beauty. Also noted with admiration were the Hendricks garden at 2904 Wakefield, the Pierce garden at 3003 Stradford, and the Kraus garden at 2910 Stradford.
The Mauney garden, front and back, offers the passerby a bright and lavish display of mature summer blooms coupled with newly-opened fall flowers. Thanks to the Mauneys for keeping our neighborhood blossoming well into October! And thanks to all those whose lively displays of chrysanthemums add so much to this most beautiful month of the year. The Committee gives special recognition to the area of Stroubles Mill that our former SMNA president, Carl McDaniels, calls "the four corners of beauty." The gardens at the intersection of Monticello and Mount Vernon (the Harafs at 500 Monticello, the Scotts at 2801 Mount Vernon, the Hartmans at 2709 Mount Vernon and the Nuenighoffs at 2802 Mount Vernon) have set a high standard of beauty and overall excellence that gives us all great pleasure as we enjoy our neighborhood walks. Thanks to this year's Committee: Julie and Glen Earthman, Bob and Franciska Dyke, Bob and Beth Sturgis, Dennis and Anne Hartman, and Mike and Pat Hyer. Your observant eyes and thoughtful opinions were much appreciated.
The Spencers’ yard wins the Award for this month. It is most impressive from both the front and back of the house, especially the bright patches of yellow. Honorable mention goes to: 2902 Stradford Lane, the Colpitts; 2801 Mt. Vernon Lane, the Scotts; 500 Monticello Lane, the Harafs; and 3013 Lancaster Drive, the Mauneys. A note of appreciation goes to all residents for keeping the neighborhood looking so nice.
