The Southwest Virginia Social Dance Society (SVSDS) promotes social
dancing in the area by sponsoring regular dances and practice
sessions. Dance instruction is offered in Lindy, Jitterbug, East Coast,
West Coast, and other swing dance styles. Dances are organized
with either recorded music or live bands featuring Big Band, Rhythm
& Blues, early Rock 'n Roll, and other swing music.
The SVSDS is lead by several dancers who find the places to dance, hire teachers and bands, prepare the halls for dancing, and publicize the dances. The SVSDS works in cooperation with Solely Swing, the student offshoot of the SVSDS. The SVSDS does not currently have a base of operations or a regular place to host dances. No alcohol or tobacco products are allowed at SVSDS functions. Events are open to all ages and lifestyles, and to both couples and singles. Children are welcome with adequate supervision. You do not need a partner to attend any class, dance, or workshop. All dances are preceeded by a one hour beginning swing class and include refreshments. Membership is optional but encouraged. These dues provide working capital to rent rooms and hire bands. Members of the SVSDS pay a reduced admission price at all SVSDS and Soley Swing functions.
